Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school.
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
  • Residency Training: Completion of residency approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency standards include ACGME, AOA, or equivalent non-US programs with verified practice in the US.
  • Residents in training may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) under specific conditions.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical Requirements include moderate lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, vision, hearing, and speech capabilities.
  • Applicants pending completion of educational or licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but not hired until all are met.
Duties

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is recruiting for a full-time Primary Care Physician. The incumbent will be board-eligible or board-certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine and responsible for providing primary care to enrolled patients at the medical center and its outpatient clinics.

The provider will deliver team-based care supported by nursing and clerical staff, including pharmacists, social workers, psychologists, and nutritionists. The medical center is an academic tertiary care facility affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Columbia University.

Responsibilities include providing acute, routine, and preventive care; delivering direct care via multiple modalities; participating in team-based care; contributing to quality improvement and program development; supervising and instructing medical students and residents; and ensuring compliance with standards and policies.
