Job description

Job Title: Staff Ophthalmologist

The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS), located in Montgomery, AL, and Tuskegee, AL, is seeking a full-time Staff Ophthalmologist.

This position is assigned to the Surgical Service, under the supervision of the Chief of Surgical Service. The selected Ophthalmologist will be responsible for providing comprehensive ophthalmology care to veterans, including clinical and surgical services.

Responsibilities:
  1. Determine the need for surgical or non-surgical treatment of urgent or emergent ophthalmology consultations during on-call hours.
  2. Supervise outpatient clinics in Ophthalmology and Optometry.
  3. Perform minor and major ophthalmic surgical procedures, following credentialing and privileging approvals.
  4. Examine and treat patients with simple or complex ophthalmology complaints.
  5. Complete preoperative evaluations and obtain informed consent for surgeries.
  6. Ensure appropriate postoperative care and follow-up.
  7. Adhere to VA directives and policies.
  8. Assist in reducing surgical and electronic wait lists.
  9. Participate in administrative duties and other facility needs as appropriate.

**Requirements:**
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is highly preferred.

**Qualifications:**
Board certification or eligibility in Ophthalmology. Completion of a fully accredited US residency program in Ophthalmology, with or without additional fellowship training. Teaching and supervision experience with Medical Students/Residents. Glaucoma fellowship training or proficiency in glaucoma surgeries is preferred. Excellent surgical skills, particularly in cataract and laser surgeries, are required. Interest in other surgical procedures is encouraged.

**Salary:** Up to $300,000 per year. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited).
  • Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical license.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Ophthalmology.
