Job description

Job Summary

The OB‑GYN performs a wide range of medical duties related to women’s health, including examinations, diagnostic tests, and screenings such as pap smears, pelvic exams, and breast exams. The physician diagnoses and treats disorders and diseases specific to the female reproductive system, provides prenatal care, assists in childbirth, and offers guidance on family planning and reproductive health. The OB‑GYN gives general inpatient and outpatient services within the scope of practice and in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provides and manages direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses, procedures, and treatment as a physician of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed medical conditions.
  • Refs patients to specialists and relevant patient‑care components as appropriate.
  • Conducts routine check‑ups on patients.
  • Records medical histories.
  • Educates patients about disease prevention, detection, and reproductive health.
  • Collaborates with other medical and on‑medical personnel.
  • Directs and coordinates the patient‑care activities of nursing and support staff as required.
  • Participates in providing on‑call coverage for hospital services.
  • Trains and supervises medical students and residents engaged in specialty activities and procedures, as appropriate.
  • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, Medical Staff Bylaws, continuous quality‑improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection‑control standards.
  • Participates in specified health‑promotion, education, and/or prevention programs as appropriate.
  • Keeps up to date with current practices and innovations.
  • Oversees, develops, and helps implement the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) system.
  • Responds to emergency medical situations in an urgent manner and performs on‑spot emergency assistance, which may include first aid and/or CPR.
  • Practices and behaves in a professional, safe, and ethical manner at all times.
  • Serves as a patient advocate.
  • Maintains friendly and courteous interpersonal communication skills and a positive service attitude.
  • Participates in performance‑improvement and educational activities. Completes all CEU’s as required by respective licensure. If licensed, maintains an active and current license.
  • Works willingly and accepts assignments as given.
  • Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.
  • Participates in opportunities that enhance personal and professional growth.
  • Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
  • Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and standards of conduct relating to the position and reports any suspected violations of law or standards of conduct.
  • Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards.
  • Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, standard precautions, and compliance with hazardous‑waste procedures as described in St. Anthony’s Safety Manual.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee, and organizational information.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Directs and coordinates the patient‑care activities of nursing and support staff as required. May serve as a department director to the Medical Staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing complaints.

Qualifications

Education, Licenses, Certifications
  • Graduate of an accredited MD or DO medical school program.
  • Graduate of an OBGYN residency program.
  • Fellowship training preferred.
  • Certification/Licensure: State of Iowa licensure and CSA certification; Federal DEA Certification; Board certified or board eligible in a specified area of medical specialty.
  • Basic and Advanced Life Support for adults.
  • STABLE certification.
  • NRP certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.

Other Requirements
  • May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status when applicable.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patients, families, managers, and the general public.
