Job description

The Physician - OB-GYN provides comprehensive medical care related to women's health, including preventive care, diagnosis, treatment, prenatal care, childbirth, family planning, and reproductive health services. The physician performs examinations, diagnostic testing, screenings, procedures, and treatments in inpatient and outpatient settings and provides general medical services within the scope of practice and assigned departments.

The physician collaborates with clinical and non-clinical personnel, directs patient care activities, participates in hospital on-call coverage, supports quality improvement initiatives, and contributes to education and professional development activities consistent with the mission, vision, values, policies, and strategic objectives of the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides and manages direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses, procedures, and treatment as an OB-GYN physician in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Prescribes pharmaceuticals, medications, and treatment regimens appropriate to assessed medical conditions.
  • Refers patients to specialists and appropriate patient care services as indicated.
  • Conducts routine patient examinations and follow-up visits.
  • Obtains, reviews, and maintains accurate medical histories and clinical documentation.
  • Educates patients regarding disease prevention, detection, reproductive health, and wellness.
  • Collaborates effectively with medical, nursing, administrative, and support personnel.
  • Directs and coordinates patient care activities of nursing and support staff as required.
  • Participates in hospital and departmental on-call coverage.
  • Trains and supervises medical students and residents engaged in specialty activities and procedures, as appropriate.
  • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, Medical Staff Bylaws, quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Participates in health promotion, education, and prevention programs as appropriate.
  • Maintains current knowledge of clinical practices, standards, technologies, and innovations in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Oversees, develops, and assists in implementing Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities.
  • Responds promptly to emergency medical situations and provides emergency assistance, including first aid and/or CPR, as required.
  • Practices in a professional, safe, ethical, and patient-centered manner.
  • Serves as a patient advocate.
  • Maintains professional interpersonal communication skills and a positive service attitude.
  • Participates in performance improvement and educational activities.
  • Completes required continuing education and maintains all applicable certifications and licensure.
  • Accepts and performs assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Attends mandatory meetings, training sessions, and organizational programs.
  • Participates in opportunities that support personal and professional growth.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
  • Complies with Corporate Compliance policies and all applicable laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct.
  • Complies with applicable state and federal regulations and Joint Commission (JCAHO) standards.
  • Maintains a safe work environment through appropriate safety practices, standard precautions, and hazardous waste procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient, resident, employee, and organizational information.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directs and coordinates patient care activities of nursing and support staff as required and may serve as a department director to the Medical Staff.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, training, planning and assigning work, directing and evaluating performance, recognizing and addressing performance issues, handling complaints, and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, LICENSURE, AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Graduate of an accredited MD or DO medical school program.
  • Completion of an accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program.
  • Fellowship training preferred.
  • CSA certification.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification for adults.
  • STABLE certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Must maintain all required licenses and certifications in current and active status.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards governing the delivery of medical care.
  • Knowledge of quality, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of community medical diagnostic and patient care services.
  • Ability to supervise, advise, educate, and train clinical professionals and students within the area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of medications, pharmaceutical therapies, and non-pharmaceutical patient care interventions.
  • Ability to prescribe appropriate medications, establish treatment regimens, and provide patient instructions.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and workshops.
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods, and procedures for medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of applicable accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to observe, assess, document, and communicate patient symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Trustworthy, compassionate, and professional character.
  • Excellent bedside manner and patient-service orientation.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • May be subject to an organizational credentialing and privileging process.
  • Must maintain credentialed and privileged status, when applicable.
