Job description

Seeking a BE/BC Neuro-oncologist to join our team in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, with an Academic Appointment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (U of I) and the Illinois College of Medicine.

Position Details
  1. Academic appointment (Tenure or Research Track) will be based on qualifications and experience.
  2. The Neuro-oncologist will primarily practice at the Urbana campus, with approximately 80% clinical duties at the Cancer Institute/Hospital and 20% research at U of I, with protected research time depending on interest and experience.
  3. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduates, medical students, residents, fellows, graduate students, and post-doctoral candidates.
Collaborative Environment

The candidate will join a team comprising 6 neurosurgeons, 7 hematology/oncology physicians, 4 radiation oncologists, and several APPs. Clinical collaboration will involve two physician mentors—one in hematology/oncology and one in neurosurgery.

Clinical Responsibilities
  1. Evaluate patients and prescribe chemotherapy and biological therapies for primary brain tumors.
  2. Assist hematology/oncology physicians with management of patients receiving intrathecal chemotherapy via Ommaya reservoir.
  3. Practice in a multidisciplinary setting with access to infusion rooms, biweekly Brain Tumor Case Conferences, and comprehensive hospital support.
  4. Potential participation in a future multi-disciplinary neuro-oncology clinic with collaborative coverage from hematology/oncology physicians.
Research Opportunities

Exceptional research opportunities include brain imaging with advanced 7 Tesla MRI. The U of I offers extensive neuroscience research, from cognitive neuroscience to imaging projects at the Biomedical Imaging Center at Beckman Institute, supporting research involving MRI, PET/SPECT/CT for humans, animals, and materials. The candidate can pursue basic or translational research, develop collaborations, and seek funding, with a start-up package provided for new graduates.

Additional Departmental Highlights

Our teams utilize advanced surgical techniques, including awake craniotomies, neuro-navigation, intraoperative ultrasound, and fluorescence-guided glioma resections. Radiation therapy is delivered via state-of-the-art Varian True Beam linear accelerators, enabling highly conformal treatments and stereotactic radiosurgery.
