New Residency at Leading Healthcare System in Dallas.

Named a top-tier medical school for primary care by U.S. News & World Report, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (HSC) is a leader in training physicians skilled in comprehensive primary care and rural medicine. As the oldest state-funded osteopathic medical school in Texas, TCOM excels through its innovative medical school curriculum, cutting-edge research, quality patient care, outstanding student performance, and response to community needs while expanding the frontiers of scientific discovery. In fact, over 60 percent of TCOM's graduates practice primary care medicine, helping reduce the shortage of physicians in our Texas communities. Located in the Fort Worth Cultural District, HSC is one of the nation's premier graduate academic medical centers, with more than 2,400 students and six schools that specialize in patient-centered education, research, and health care.

We are a supportive organization with extensive resources and are seeking a visionary, board-certified Psychiatry physician educator to contribute to the development of the inaugural Psychiatry Residency Program at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in conjunction with the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System in Dallas, TX. This is an exciting opportunity to create a new program with one's vision in the setting of VA Health Care.

The Founding Program Director is responsible for the development, leadership, organization, operation, and general administration of the Psychiatry Residency Program sponsored by Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. The Program Director will support and amplify our longstanding commitment to Graduate Medical Education (GME) by positioning the VA Health System-based Psychiatry Residency as a premier, community-based training program in North Texas and across the state. The anticipated launch date for the fully sponsored ACGME-accredited Psychiatry Residency Program is expected to begin July 2027 and will enroll a total of 12 residents.

The Program Director will have a strong interest, and at least three years' experience in teaching residents or fellows in GME and will play a vital role in shaping the future of our Psychiatry Residency Program, ensuring its success. The program will have a full-time coordinator to support the operations.

Psychiatry Residency Program Impact

Mental health remains a health workforce shortage area throughout Texas, and in particular within the VA Health Care System. The collaboration between the University of North Texas Health Science Center and Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System creates a new opportunity to meet this critical need through the development and operation of a new GME program in Psychiatry. Furthermore, successful program outcomes will pave the way for additional training opportunities for TCOM students and the development of additional GME programs with the VA in the future.

VA North Texas Health Care System, Veterans Integrated Service Network is a teaching hospital that provides a full range of services to Veterans with state-of-the-art technology, education, and research. Operating as the nation's second-largest VA Health Care System, the VA has facilities across North Texas including Dallas, Garland, and Bonham, and ten community-based VA clinics in Dallas, Decatur, Denton, Fort Worth, Granbury, Grand Prairie, Greenville, Plano, Sherman, and Tyler. There are promotion opportunities within the VA, including promotion to a Medical Directorship and other positions.
