Program Description

Within Leidos Biomedical Research Inc. (operator of the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research), the Clinical Research Directorate (CRD) provides clinical supervision of programs at the clinical end of the research spectrum. The quality assurance programs provide the required autonomy and transparency of Good Manufacturing Practice quality assurance operations. CRD also provides operational support for clinical research and supports clinical trials management, regulation, pharmacovigilance, and protocol development/protocol navigations. These support services include dedicated clinical research professionals who provide patient care to clinical trial participants at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center, and other research services that support the domestic and international clinical research initiatives of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and several other institutes within NIH. CRD’s support services are strategically aligned with its mission to provide comprehensive, dedicated support to assist NIH researchers in providing the highest quality of clinical research in compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines, maintaining data integrity, protecting human subjects, and helping to advance scientific clinical research. CRD facilitates the conduct of NIH-sponsored clinical trials that investigate the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, influenza, HIV, infectious diseases and emerging health challenges like Ebola virus and COVID-19, parasitic infections, heart, lung and blood disorders, and rare and neglected diseases. CRD’s collaborative approach to clinical research support and the expertise and dedication of staff to the continuation and success of CRD’s mission has contributed to improving the overall standards of public health on a global scale.

Key Roles/Responsibilities

  • Provides inpatient and outpatient consultative Infectious Disease care for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) Patients
  • Provides consultative ID care for Primary immunodeficient patients, oncology, CAR-T cell as well as non-transplant patients who have Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEI)
  • Teaches trainees at all levels who rotate through the Transplant and IEI service
  • Provide support for inpatient and outpatients with IEI
  • Oversees a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care for patients with IEI
  • Participates in the multidisciplinary care of HSCT inclusive of pre-transplant evaluation and post-transplant ID care
  • Completes in-depth documentation through written progress notes, dictation summaries, and communication with referring physicians according to medical record documentation requirements
  • Participates in clinical rounds and conferences
  • Administers and adjusts trial medication under the guidance of the Principal Investigator and protocol requirements
  • Explains discharge instructions and medication regimens to patients and follow up with consulting service recommendations
  • Orders, performs, and interprets basic laboratory diagnostic/treatment tests and procedures
  • Performs comprehensive health care assessments by obtaining health and family medical histories
  • Completes physical examinations
  • Performs minor surgeries (incisional and excisional biopsies)
  • Maintains and completes medical records
  • Places orders for medications and tests
  • Distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings and determine which findings need further evaluation and/or collaboration assessment
  • Develops and implements a plan for care, including appropriate patient/family counseling and education based on in-depth knowledge of the specific patient populations and/or protocols
  • Evaluates, modifies, and revises care plan at appropriate intervals
  • Assesses acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities
  • Develops written protocols for management of illnesses and injuries in conjunction with either/or the consulting and referring physician
  • Diagnoses and manages common acute or stable chronic health problems, injuries, and illnesses making assessments of acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities
  • Assesses needs and/or problem areas and plan appropriate therapeutic measures
  • Assists with extensive clinical trials programs focused on developing novel therapies
  • Attends scheduled patient care rounds and didactic lecture sessions of the clinical team to which s/he is assigned
  • Interprets and documents diagnostic tests and studies related to clinical trial interventions and patient conditions
  • Ensures unusual problems are referred to physicians or an administrative supervisor
  • Independently evaluates patients in both the inpatient and outpatient clinic settings
  • Provides documentation and monitoring/grading of side effects related to a variety of study interventions including drugs and psychological behaviors
  • Explains the care management/discharge plan to all members of the covering team (inpatient, PIs, attendings, on-call resident, case manager, etc.) at sign-out
  • All activities shall be performed in coordination with a government attending physician
  • This position is located in Bethesda, Maryland


Basic Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • D. or D.O. and hold an active, unrestricted medical license in the United States
  • Board certification in Internal Medicine and Allergy and Immunology or Infectious Diseases (other Internal Medicine specialty training will be considered)
  • Meet the requirements for credentialing to practice as a staff physician in the NIH Clinical Center
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of, three (3) years relevant experience
  • Prior experience in clinical trials management
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Prior experience focused on Primary Immune Deficiency
  • Infectious Disease background
  • Transplant Infectious Disease experience
