Job description

Pediatrician Candidates

It is OUR MISSION to offer excellent quality primary care and health education to every individual in our community while providing this care in a culturally sensitive, professional and compassionate manner with special emphasis on reaching the underserved.

We are a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center serving the underserved in rural northeastern North Carolina.

Our well-established primary medical care practice was founded in 1974 and is directed by a patient-majority Board of Directors. We have over 300 employees across 10 locations, all focused on providing patient-centered, evidence-based, quality care. Ten locations are Level III Patient Centered Medical Homes, with the rest soon to be accredited.

Our centrally located practice is on I-95 in northeastern North Carolina, approximately 1-2 hours northeast of Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/RTP, south of Richmond/Petersburg VA, and northwest of Greenville NC.

We offer a range of services including FP/IM Primary Care, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, School-Based Health Centers, Dental, In-house Pharmacies & 340b pharmacy services, Integrated Behavioral Health (psychologists and LCSWs), Case Management, RN ACO Care Managers, and a Community-Based Outreach Program targeting Migrant Seasonal Farm Workers, health education, and insurance outreach. As a Community Health Center, we see everyone, with a special emphasis on the underserved. We accept all insurances, including Medicare, Medicaid, NC Health Choice, and uninsured patients.

Position Information

Anticipated call schedule is 1:3 weekdays and 1:4 weekends. Providers can choose between a 7 on/7 off schedule or a traditional schedule (Monday–Friday, with a few evenings until 7 PM, and possible Saturday morning clinic coverage in rotation). Note: The 7 on/7 off schedule requires staying in the area during on weeks; the traditional schedule requires full-time residence.

Average daily patient load includes:

  • Floor census: 0-2 patients, with about 15-20 minutes per patient. No complicated cases; sick newborns or pre-term infants are transferred to other facilities.
  • Nursery census: 1-5 babies, averaging about 15-20 minutes to examine and speak with parents.

Our practice is very busy outpatient pediatrics but not a busy pediatric hospital. Most on-call time involves phone triage and advice, with approximately 10-15 calls per weekend. On-call pediatricians may return to the hospital mainly for stat C-sections; rarely for ER cases when ER providers are uncomfortable. Mothers in labor with infants with known abnormalities or pre-term labor are transferred prior to delivery. Many weekends have no deliveries; typical weekends include 1-2 C-sections, with remaining deliveries routine.

Hospital admissions are for routine pediatric diagnoses such as asthma, dehydration, fever, and pneumonia. We do not handle NICU or PICU cases; these are transferred to specialized facilities.
