Job description

Summary

The Hospitalist Staff Physician is a direct patient care position responsible for the operations of the Hospitalist Section of the Medicine Service. The staff physician collaborates with the Section Chief to establish the mission and objectives of the Section. Additionally, the physician should have experience with education and training activities within the medical resident program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending training or license completion should be noted, but employment is contingent upon meeting all requirements. Current VA-employed physicians who met previous qualification standards are deemed qualified.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.
  • Degree: Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved medical school.
  • License: Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. or its territories.
  • Residency Training: Completion of an accredited residency program leading to eligibility for board certification, approved by the VA.
  • Additional eligibility for residents enrolled in accredited programs, including PRPs, with specific scope and supervision guidelines.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred: Board Certification or Eligibility.
  • Physical and mental requirements detailed, including ability to handle various physical tasks and cognitive functions.
Duties
  • Serve as attending physician on hospitalist or teaching service, including admissions and rounds.
  • Coordinate specialty consults, discharges, and post-acute care.
  • Manage transfers and provide inpatient consultative services across various medical disciplines.
  • Participate in the VA's total rewards program, including salary, bonuses, leave, retirement, insurance, licensure, CME reimbursement, malpractice coverage, and work schedule.
  • Work schedule typically involves a 7-day on, 7-day off rotation, covering all necessary duty hours and shifts, including holidays and weekends.
