Job description

Summary

Position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensure may be tentatively referred and selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. VA physicians previously employed who met the requirements at initial appointment are deemed qualified.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
  • Residency Training: Completion of an approved residency program leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency programs must be approved by ACGME, AOA, or deemed equivalent by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
  • Enrolled residents in accredited programs are eligible for appointment as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and appointed on an intermittent or fee basis. PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred: Board Certified or Board Eligible, extensive experience in Hematology/Oncology.
  • Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical and be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Specific vision, hearing, or speech requirements may apply but can often be compensated for with aids.
Duties
  • Provide comprehensive hematology and oncology care, including diagnosis, treatment, and consultations.
  • Assess patients with acute complaints, diseases, and injuries.
  • Administer chemotherapeutic agents and manage malignancies.
  • Participate in rounding, telemedicine, and weekend call rotations.
  • Assist with pulmonary nodule diagnosis, counsel patients, and interpret diagnostic tests.
  • Order and interpret laboratory, radiologic, and EKG tests.
  • Manage outpatient cases, prescribe medications, and provide education to patients and families.
  • Participate in the VHA Physician Total Rewards program, including incentives, benefits, and work schedule details.
