Job description

Summary

The WPB VA has a designated role in the service that serves as the Attending Physician and Palliative care provider in the Geriatrics and Extended Care service (GEC) within the community living center—both inpatient and outpatient—in the VA WPB Health Care system. The incumbent provides clinical services in Hospice–Palliative care and Geriatrics for veterans enrolled in the VA WPB Health Care system, and will also serve as a teaching faculty member in our Hospice & Palliative care and Geriatrics fellowship programs.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below, as well as any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Pending applicants may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).
  • Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
  • Residency training in an accredited core specialty training program in Geriatrics‑Palliative Care/Hospice Care or Internal Medicine/Family Practice with experience in Geriatrics. Approved residencies include ACGME‑ or AOA‑accredited programs, or non‑U.S. residencies followed by at least five years of verified U.S. practice.
  • Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) who are fully licensed, not on a training license, may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis and are not considered independent practitioners.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Board certification in Geriatrics‑Palliative Care/Hospice Care or Internal Medicine/Family Practice with experience in Geriatrics.
  • Physical requirements: light to moderate lifting (15–44 lbs), light carrying (15 lbs), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking up to 2 hours, standing up to 2 hours, kneeling up to 1 hour, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision correctable at 13–16 in, far vision 20/20 to 20/40, depth perception, color discrimination, hearing (aid permitted), emotional and mental stability, ability to work closely with others and alone.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serves as a resource to senior management and other clinical and administrative leaders on issues impacting the delivery of care for veterans who use Geriatrics Department services.
  • Assists team members in maintaining a comprehensive Hospice–Palliative Care and Geriatrics program to ensure compliance with VHA guidelines, directives, and other relevant standards.
  • Participates in Palliative Care consults as a team member and takes direct patient‑care assignments in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Acts as attending of record for veterans admitted to the Community Living Center, including the Valor Way Hospice Neighborhood.
  • Participates in educational activities related to service delivery to community living center residents and promotes continuing‑education programs for staff.
  • Establishes and promotes an atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation among professional and support staff to achieve high productivity, customer and staff satisfaction, and effective communication across services and programs.
  • Collaborates with the Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care on medical provider assignments and coverage.
  • Ensures resident care services are within established clinical privileges, scope of practice, competencies, and qualifications.
  • Serves as direct staff provider within the GEC department as assigned.
Benefits and Compensation
  • Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Telework: not available. Travel: not required. Virtual: not a virtual position.
  • EDRP (Education Debt Reduction Program) eligibility: up to $200 000 over 1–5 years, subject to VHA review. No previously accepted EDRP participants may reapply.
  • Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: none.
  • Salary: competitive, with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.
  • Paid time off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, and up to 5 days CME).
  • Retirement: traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5 % VA contribution.
  • Insurance: federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care (many federal plans transferable to retirement).
  • Licensure requirement: one full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory.
