Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending training or license completion should be indicated, but all requirements must be met before hiring. Current VA-employed physicians who met initial appointment standards are deemed to meet basic requirements.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed if qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved school.
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. or its territories.
  • Residency training: Completion of VA-approved residency leading to eligibility for board certification. Residents enrolled in accredited programs are eligible for appointment as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) under supervision.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Board Certified or Board eligible in General Surgery.
  • Physical requirements include visual acuity, hearing, speech, manual dexterity, and ability to perform long periods of standing, walking, and other physical activities. Exposure to infectious materials and stressful situations may occur. Ability to perform CPR per ACLS/BLS is required.
Duties
  • This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT until July 14, 2025, with initial referral cut-off on May 20, 2025, and subsequent cut-offs every 5 days.
  • Eligible applications received after the initial cut-off will be considered as vacancies become available.

  • Responsibilities include patient evaluation, health risk assessment, treatment planning, and direct patient care such as history-taking, physical exams, medication management, and diagnostic evaluations.
  • Administrative duties involve documentation, medication reconciliation, and participation in education of residents.
