Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are not eligible to apply.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship or, if non‑citizen, only when no qualified citizens can be recruited per VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course was completed.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: Physicians must have completed an accredited core specialty training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs that leads to eligibility for board certification.
• Board certification is required in Gastroenterology.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical standards and required physical examination before placement; this position requires drug testing and lifting 15‑44 pounds, pushing for approximately 2 hours, reaching above shoulder level, use of fingers and both hands, walking and standing for 3‑5 hours, kneeling, rapid mental and muscular coordination, depth perception, and color discrimination.

Duties

• Application Timeline: This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until July 20, 2026. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications is May 26, 2025, with subsequent cut‑off dates every two weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be accepted on an ongoing basis.
• The role reports directly to the ACOS for Specialty Care.
• Administrative responsibilities include overseeing programmatic and administrative resources, selecting, orienting, and providing continuing education for staff in collaboration with other physician leaders.
• Program coordination: Assist in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and organizational structures to achieve the goals of the gastroenterology section.
• Clinical responsibilities: Provide direct outpatient care for patients with gastrointestinal problems and consult against VA PIHCS clinical staff in ACC and CBOCs clinics, including face‑to‑face visits, travel for CBOC visits, virtual visits via telehealth or telephone, and e‑consults as required.
• Teaching and training: Provide leadership, guidance, and education to VA PIHCS gastroenterology staff; may also teach UH JABSOM residents, medical students, and other students rotating on the gastroenterology service; serve as liaison to UH JABSOM Gastroenterology service for coordinating teaching activities.
• Administrative oversight: Monitor compliance with agency regulations, medical staff bylaws, facility policies, Joint Commission standards, and other regulations.
• Quality improvement: Participate in hospital and medical staff activities such as accreditation requirements, quality assessment, quality improvement projects, committee assignments, lean activities, HEDIS, SAIL measures, etc.
• Customer service: Communicate courteously and respectfully with veterans, their representatives, visitors, and VA staff; provide consistent information per established policies and procedures.
• Information security: Protect printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes, VA policy, and VHA policy.
• Supervisory controls: The Gastroenterology section Chief oversees staff gastroenterology providers.
