About the facility:
Conveniently located near major cities and international airports, the Erie VA serves the Veteran communities of northwestern Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio. Situated near Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay, this location is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Erie boasts some of the best fishing in the United States. The Erie VA is approximately 2 hours from Pittsburgh, PA; Buffalo, NY; Cleveland, OH; and other unique towns like Slippery Rock, making it an excellent base for exploring the outdoors and waterside activities on Lake Erie.
Position Overview:
The average census is 30 patients per 24-hour day.
Supervision and teaching: The physician will oversee Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residents, as well as Medical Students and Physician Assistant Students. Responsibilities include ensuring documentation of all notes and encounters complies with VA standards, TJC guidelines, and Wilkes Barre VAMC policies. The physician will also handle administrative duties related to resident training documentation.
Scope of Care includes initial evaluation, emergent treatment, and management of:
- Minor wound care, respiratory, gastrointestinal, burns, musculoskeletal trauma, dermatological, ENT, eye, and urological issues.
- Minor procedures such as local anesthesia, incision and drainage, laceration repair, nail trephination, electro-coagulation, nasal cautery, gastric lavage, bladder catheterization, peripheral IV insertion, and spinal immobilization.
- Management of abdominal, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, hematopoietic, endocrine, head and neck, eye, nervous system, psychiatric, respiratory, renal/urologic, and OB/GYN emergencies, including trauma and infections.
- Suturing minor lacerations.
Major procedures performed in the emergency department include central venous and arterial line placement, chest tube insertion, needle thoracostomy, peritoneal lavage, defibrillation, intubation, lumbar puncture, proctoscopy, pericardiocentesis, fracture reduction, arthrocentesis, anesthesia, pacemaker placement, and cricothyroidotomy.
Patients with traumatic injuries requiring stabilization and transfer to a Level One Trauma Center will be managed accordingly.
Schedule:
12-hour shifts (8 am–8 pm or 8 pm–8 am). The primary need is for day shifts.
Rotating weekends and holidays.
The emergency department operates 24/7/365, including weekdays, nights, and holidays.
