Job description

Summary

The Deputy Chief of Staff's responsibilities include overseeing Clinical Service Departments in the hospital and serving as the lead physician during the absence of the Chief of Staff. The incumbent will collaborate with clinical service chiefs and staff to improve processes, meet performance measure goals, and enhance utilization management.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending training or license completion applicants may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Existing VA-employed physicians who met initial appointment standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only when recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible)
  • Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree from an approved medical school
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in the U.S.
  • Completion of approved residency training leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Enrolled residents in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and only appointed on an intermittent or fee basis
  • Proficiency in English
Preferred Experience:
  • At least three years of supervisory and chief experience, preferably within VA or the Department of Defense
  • Expertise in comprehensive evaluations within the specialty
  • Knowledge of contemporary specialty practices, fiscal planning, workload projections, and regulatory compliance
  • Leadership skills aligned with the health care system's mission and values
Physical Requirements:

Light lifting and carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, use of fingers, walking, standing, bending, rapid coordination, near vision, and hearing ability.

Duties
  • Oversee clinical medical services and serve as acting Chief of Staff in their absence
  • Work at least 50% in clinical settings within primary specialty and training
  • Collaborate with service chiefs to improve processes and meet performance goals
  • Review medical contract requests and coordinate transfers effectively
  • Supervise staff aligned under the Chief of Staff Office and participate in medical center committees and task forces
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
