Job description

Summary

The Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS) reports to the Chief of Staff and serves as a key clinical resource for the Healthcare System Director and Chief of Staff. The DCOS's responsibilities include serving as the lead physician over various clinical departments, including Ambulatory Care, Mental Health & Behavioral Science, Spinal Cord Injury, Dental, Geriatrics and Extended Care, Pharmacy, Audiology and Speech Pathology, and Radiation Oncology.

Qualifications

This is an open continuous announcement that will remain open until filled. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Eligible applicants will be referred weekly until a selection is made. To qualify, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or license requirements, applicants may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the previous qualification standards at initial appointment are deemed to meet the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • The degree must be from an approved school by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion.
  • License and Registration: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. or its territories or in D.C.
  • Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification, in an accredited core specialty.
  • Additional details about residency and eligibility criteria.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Board Certification in a clinical specialty.
  • Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical, including moderate lifting, reaching, use of fingers and legs, walking, standing, bending, climbing, hearing, visual acuity, and other physical and mental competencies.
