Job description

Summary

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until June 3, 2025. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applicants will be January 17, 2025, with subsequent cut-off dates every two weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until the position is filled.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  2. Degree: Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
  3. Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the US.
  4. Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Specific approved residencies are detailed in the announcement.
  5. Residents: Enrolled residents in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
  6. Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  7. Preferred Experience: Board Eligible/Board Certified in Internal Medicine or Family Practice.
  8. Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform duties in an outpatient setting, including lifting, reaching, standing, kneeling, and visual and hearing abilities.
Duties
  • Provide patient-centered care at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System, including primary and specialty care.
  • Work in a state-of-the-art facility serving over 170,000 veterans across multiple counties.
  • Participate in comprehensive total rewards benefits, including competitive salary, bonuses, paid time off, retirement, insurance, licensure, CME reimbursement, and malpractice coverage.
  • Collaborate closely with the Chief and Assistant Chiefs of Primary Care.
  • Oversee medical and provider personnel and operations, ensuring quality and risk management.
  • Provide leadership for Primary Care Service goals and strategic planning.
  • Develop and review clinic policies, train staff, and handle patient complaints.
  • Work with ancillary services and other healthcare team members to ensure excellent patient care and satisfaction.
  • Provide direct patient care, including ordering tests, prescribing medications, and consulting with specialists.
  • Work schedule includes four 10-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, with flexible options. Telework is not available.
