Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Eligibility requirements must be met per VHA policy, and applications must be submitted within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements may allow for tentative referral and selection, but employment is contingent upon meeting all requirements. Current VA-employed physicians who initially met the qualification standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved medical school.
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S., its territories, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Completion of an accredited residency program approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency programs approved by ACGME or AOA are recognized; non-U.S. residencies followed by at least five years of verified U.S. practice are also acceptable.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA residencies who meet other requirements are eligible for appointment as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and appointed on an intermittent or fee basis. PRPs are not independent practitioners and will perform duties under supervision.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional requirements include supervisory experience preferred, and for more info, visit VA Qualification Standards.
  • Physical requirements as per VA Handbook 5019.
Duties
  • The Chief of Cardiology oversees cardiology services, ensuring access, appropriate clinic scheduling, and timely readings to maintain patient safety and adequate coverage.
  • Diagnose and manage conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, including heart failure, arrhythmias, congenital heart conditions, arteriosclerosis, and hypertension.
  • Conduct consultations, treatment, and management of cardiovascular conditions.
  • Participate in VA's comprehensive total rewards package, including incentives, bonuses, paid time off, retirement plans, insurance options, licensure, CME reimbursement, malpractice coverage, and work schedule from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
