Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Completion of an approved residency program leading to eligibility for board certification, including ACGME, AOA, or equivalent non-US programs with at least five years of verified practice in the U.S.
  • Residents enrolled in accredited residency programs are eligible to be appointed as 'Physician Resident Providers' (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

  • Physical Requirements: Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, and ability to perform long periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, and other physical activities. May require exposure to infectious materials and stressful situations. Must be capable of working effectively under stress and perform CPR per ACLS/BLS protocols.
Duties
  • This is an open continuous announcement until June 30, 2025, with initial referral cut-off on May 6, 2025, and subsequent cut-offs every five days. Qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies arise.
  • Provide comprehensive neurosurgical care, including brain and spine surgeries, preoperative and postoperative management, and diagnostic interventions.
  • Supervise trainees and ensure documentation complies with medical staff regulations.
  • Provide after-hours call coverage and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams for patient care and discharge planning.
  • Serve as supervisor for neurosurgery staff, develop protocols, and ensure quality and safety standards.
  • Instruct and educate neurosurgery residents.
