To fulfill the mission and role of Jefferson Abington Hospital, the Chair, Department of Surgery is an employed position with administrative, educational, and clinical responsibilities. This position reports directly to the Chief of Staff, Jefferson Abington Hospital.

In addition to fulfilling the requirements outlined in the Jefferson Medical Group physician contract, the Chair of the Department of Surgery at Abington-Jefferson Health works in collaboration with Hospital Leadership, the Chief Medical Officer, and the Medical Executive Committee, as well as Enterprise service lines, to provide leadership, strategy, and oversight over the Surgery Department for Jefferson Abington Hospital.

Responsibilities are divided equally between clinical work hours and administrative duties. It is expected that the Surgery Department Chair's FTE splits time equally between clinical hours (0.5 FTE) and administrative hours (0.5 FTE).

The Chair will provide overall leadership of Divisions and Sections within the Department of Surgery, responsible for strategic execution, clinical services, professional and business performance, medical education, scholarship, and physician practice. The Chair will promote an environment that facilitates job satisfaction and well-being among physicians by establishing effective communication channels and seeking input from key stakeholders in strategic planning.

The Chair establishes and evaluates performance expectations to ensure high-quality patient care, clinical standards, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and positive clinical outcomes. The Chair leads multidisciplinary efforts to improve care efficiency and equity, champions patient experience enhancements, and drives business development, including expanding existing and developing new clinical programs, recruiting the necessary workforce, and setting policies to increase departmental volume and efficiency.

The Chair also acts as the chief education officer, overseeing residency and fellowship programs, ensuring an optimal learning environment, and promoting scholarly achievement and clinical research. The Chair actively participates in educational conferences, fosters collaboration with research initiatives, and manages departmental academic and research efforts.

Additional responsibilities include aligning employed and community-based physicians, leading change initiatives, and unifying the department to enhance patient access and high-quality service delivery. The Chair is a voting member of the Medical Staff Executive Committee.
