Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years). Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) specified in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected, but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in the VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy).
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training completed in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification, or one of the following alternatives:
  • Approved residency/fellowship per ACGME or AOA lists for the year completed.
  • One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) followed by two years of independent practice.
  • Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States.
• Board certification in Interventional Cardiology (additional requirement).
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical requirements: meet the physical standards for the position, including a physical exam prior to placement, random drug testing, lifting 15‑44 pounds, pushing (approximately 2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of both hands, walking and standing for 3‑5 hours, kneeling, rapid mental and muscular coordination, depth perception, color discrimination; hearing aid permitted.

Duties

• This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until August 28, 2026. The initial cutoff date for referral of eligible applications will be July 13, 2026, with subsequent cut‑off dates every two weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available.
