Job summary

Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

• Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA physicians in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA‑approved programs completed for the year of residency or fellowship.
• Alternative residency paths: (1) One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full license in the United States; (2) Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. where duties relate to the position.
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA‑accredited residency training programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis; they are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged, but will have a scope of practice to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred experience: Clinical focus in heart failure or advanced cardiac imaging; demonstrated accomplishments in research.

Duties

• The announcement is scheduled to be advertised from 17 June 2026 through 31 December 2026 – or until filled.
• First round of application reviews will be conducted 25 June 2026.
• Opportunity to join the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System and the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center as a Board Certified or Board Eligible full‑time academic Cardiologist.
• Accountable to the Chief of Cardiology.
• The candidate will be expected to qualify for faculty appointment in the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
• Duties include inpatient and outpatient consultative cardiovascular care, attendance in non‑invasive cardiology laboratories (echocardiography, stress testing, and/or advanced cardiac imaging).
• Education and supervision of Cardiovascular Disease fellows, other medical trainees, and preceptorship of advanced practice providers.
• Leadership or collaboration in basic, clinical, or health‑services research in cardiovascular disease.
