Outpatient Cancer Palliative Physician

Rush University Medical Center is seeking a highly collaborative Outpatient Cancer Palliative Physician to join our growing Cancer Palliative Care team. This is a fully clinical, outpatient position with an academic appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on experience and qualifications. The role is focused on providing comprehensive palliative care services to cancer patients at Rush University Medical Center, Rush Copley, and Rush Lisle.

The selected candidate will work as part of an integrated cancer palliative team that currently includes physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), with plans for expansion. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life for patients with cancer by addressing symptom management, goals of care, and complex decision-making in a highly coordinated setting.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide outpatient palliative care services to cancer patients, focusing on symptom management, emotional support, and goals-of-care discussions.
  2. Work collaboratively with oncologists, APPs, nurses, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure seamless, patient-centered care.
  3. Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including history-taking, physical examinations, and formulation of individualized care plans.
  4. Coordinate care across Rush University Medical Center, Rush Copley, and Rush Lisle to ensure continuity and consistency in patient management.
  5. Engage in family meetings and goals of care conversations to support patients and their loved ones through complex medical decisions.
  6. Participate in quality improvement initiatives to further integrate palliative care into oncology services.
  7. Maintain clinical documentation and contribute to team discussions in case conferences and patient rounds.
Qualifications
  1. MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  2. Board certification or eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
  3. Eligibility for medical licensure in Illinois.
  4. Strong commitment to interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration in an oncology setting.
  5. Excellent communication skills, particularly in complex and sensitive conversations with patients and families.
  6. Experience in outpatient palliative care and/or oncology preferred.

This total pay range is for a full-time, 1.0 FTE employee, and includes any incentive payments that may be applicable to this role.
