Job description

Position Summary

WashU's Nephrology Transplant team seeks a Physician Assistant to join an outpatient and inpatient practice. The team consists of 3 APPs in the outpatient setting and 1 APP in the inpatient setting. In outpatient, the APP sees patients independently; in inpatient, the APP collaborates with Nephrology and Transplant Fellows. The APP will evaluate patients for kidney and pancreas transplant, manage immunosuppressant medications, and provide post-transplant care.

The APP will have 3 months of inpatient service and 9 months outpatient. In outpatient, the APP will conduct 6 to 7 clinics per week with 3 half days of no clinical duties. The APP is expected to see 7 to 8 patients in the post-transplant clinic and 5 patients in the pre-transplant clinic. No nights or weekends. APPs are eligible for performance bonuses after one year of employment.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs physical assessments/examinations.
  • Assesses and counsels patients and obtains medical histories.
  • Monitors patient adherence to protocols.
  • Coordinates screening for research studies.
  • Collects and records data per research requirements and guidelines.
  • Develops and implements adherence plans used with protocols.
  • Bills for professional services as permitted by the collaborative practice agreement.
  • Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.
  • Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval.
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram and laboratory tests.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care and infection management.
  • Provides physicians with assistance during surgery or complicated medical procedures.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and workshops.
  • Maintains established departmental policies, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree - Physician Assistant Studies

  • Basic Life Support – American Heart Association or American Red Cross (certification required with skills assessment component).
  • Current PA licensure to practice in Missouri and/or Illinois, or ability to obtain within three months of hire.

Certifications / Professional Licenses

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification per the above standards.
