Qualifications

Job Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is responsible for managing assigned patients on the hematology oncology inpatient service, including general hematology-oncology cases such as chemotherapy, fever and neutropenia, sickle cell pain crises, or stem cell transplants. The APP demonstrates high critical thinking and clinical expertise, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, consultation, and care coordination for patients and families.

Scheduled Hours: Variable rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends.

Experience and Education

Required

Education

  • Master's degree or higher in nursing, with documentation of completion of an accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Graduate education and Texas Board of Nursing authorization must align with clinical practice area and patient population. OR
  • Graduate of a Master's degree or higher, accredited Physician Assistant program (ARC-PA accredited).

Licenses/Certifications

  • Licensure as a Pediatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (CPNP-AC) by the Texas State Board of Nursing, with prescriptive authority.
  • OR certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board (PA-C).
  • Current BLS and PALS certification by the American Heart Association or Red Cross, per UT Southwestern policy.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous pediatric hematology-oncology experience preferred.
  • New graduates with pediatric hematology-oncology and/or ICU experience may be considered.

Job Duties

  • Conduct and document comprehensive physical exams based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate patient care plans, utilizing evidence and ordering/interpreting diagnostic tests.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in technical and procedural skills relevant to the specialty.
  • Provide management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients and families regarding care and preventive health.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and research projects, applying evidence-based practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
