Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs seeks a Physician Assistant to support the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) in an outpatient clinic.

The PA will perform comprehensive history and physical exams, conduct medical record reviews, and develop treatment plans including diagnostics and referrals. Collaboration with supervising physicians and other clinicians is required to ensure high-quality patient care.

  • Develop comprehensive treatment plans with appropriate diagnostics and referrals.
  • Manage medications and coordinate specialty/subspecialty care as indicated.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and team members; maintain documentation and compliance.

Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Duties
  • The position is an open continuous announcement; it will remain open until September 15, 2026. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications was July 22, 2026, with subsequent cut‑off dates every two weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available.
  • Work schedule: full‑time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Telework and virtual options are not available.
  • Relocation/recruitment incentives: not authorized; EDRP is authorized but former EDRP participants are ineligible for incentive.

  • Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: The Primary Care (PC) Physician Assistant (PA) is a medical provider who utilizes critical thinking in the application of advanced clinical health‑care knowledge and skills – conducting comprehensive history and physical examinations to veterans; performing medical record reviews, clinical interviews, medical assessments and evaluations, making diagnoses and rendering medical opinions, and developing comprehensive treatment plans that include appropriate diagnostic testing, medication management/therapy, and specialty/subspecialty care referral where appropriate.
  • Other specialized practices and procedures may be included as appropriate when the PA and supervising physician deem necessary and when applicable documentation is completed for approval.
  • The PA will be assigned to a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) in an outpatient clinic.
  • The PA will communicate with end users at other NCHCS sites to improve clinical advice and integration into the PACT processes.
  • The PACT PA must meet mandatory education requirements.
  • The PA must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with individuals.
  • The PA must be able to navigate between various software and mainframe systems on a personal computer with an established operating system.
  • The PA must communicate effectively both orally and in writing and possess effective interpersonal and telephone skills.
  • The PA must perform multiple tasks and work in a fast‑paced environment.
  • The PA must possess customer service and problem‑solving skills.
  • The PA must maintain certification as a Physician Assistant.
  • The PA is subject to the provisions set by the Physician Assistant Professional Standards Board regarding probationary period, promotion, and other actions requiring board approval.
  • The PA must be current in all mandated annual review programs and take responsibility for attending in‑service and continuing education activities.
  • Major duties include maintaining an integrated delivery system through the expansion of clinical practices; maintaining operational efficiencies through emphasis on safe practices and national safety; actively implementing Lean principles, supporting quality improvement projects, and promoting a culture of continuous quality improvement.
  • Identifying symptoms and classifying them by acuity based on collected data; demonstrating basic triage knowledge in making appropriate clinical assessments; relying on intuitive and systematic approaches (protocols) to make health assessments; sorting, organizing group categories, comparing, analyzing, and synthesizing data about the client.
  • Demonstrating knowledge regarding VA administrative regulations such as entitlements, healthcare access points, and local policies and procedures related to these elements.
  • Educating and instructing clients on how symptoms can be treated.
  • Other duties as assigned.
