Job summary

Job description

• Establishes referral network.

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Physician Assistant (PA). The PA will be responsible for performing many patient-oriented functions such as interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, coordinating the continuum of care, providing education to patients and significant others, conducting clinic sessions, and prescribing appropriate treatments. May participate in research initiatives. Under the direction of a physician group, this position supports neuromuscular providers with their outpatient clinical duties at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Working with the attending physician, the PA performs the functions of an advanced practice practitioner to coordinate the care of patients and facilitate efficient and effective movement through the health care system. Screens and interviews patients, takes and records patient histories, and consults with physicians and other health care providers using an interdisciplinary approach to recommend a plan of care. Prescribes medications to patients as indicated. Provides consult services for inpatients and occasionally outpatients to determine need for intervention and discusses the results of consult with the attending Internist to determine optimal patient care path. Provides follow up patient care as needed in clinic. Provides counseling and instruction to patients and their significant others regarding health conditions, therapies, and procedures. May make decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatment of patients being seen for the initial evaluation of a problem, or the follow-up evaluation of a previously diagnosed and stabilized condition. Initiates requests for laboratory studies and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Participates in the coordination of research projects including patient enrollment and manages the associated documentation. Develops policies and procedures as needed to facilitate optimal patient care and functions as a liaison to nursing. Proficiently uses EPIC Meditech and EPR systems.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Provides expert level comprehensive, age appropriate, and episodic care to complex patients within the sub-specialty as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team.
• Interprets data, makes diagnoses and orders appropriate intervention.
• Obtains patient history; Performs patient care and physical examinations;
• Prepares patient summaries; Develops care/treatment plan; Attends out-patient clinics and assists with patient management.
• Develops care/treatment plan.
• Provides information to staff regarding patient's care plan and condition.
• Consistently develops effective care/treatment plan for assigned patients according to established protocols and procedures.
• Regularly confers and consults with appropriate supervisory physician and/or other pertinent professionals before implementing treatment plan.
• Consistently structures all patient care plans to meet educational, physical and social needs appropriate to the patient's age.
• Consistently provides relevant patient care information to the appropriate staff member according to department guidelines.
• Provides education to patient and family members regarding diagnosis, complications, treatment and medications in order to provide them with continuous information.
• Routine laboratory procedures such as cultures, smears, venipuncture, electrocardiograms.

Provides Emergency Care

• Maintains CPR certification.
• Maintains airway, breathing, circulation.
• Starts and provides basic CPR.
• Orders and administers anti-anaphylactic and supportive medications.

Prescribes Drugs

• Prescribes medications, including oral, parenteral, intramuscular, or subcutaneous drugs.
• Prescribes Schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4,5 drugs under the guidelines of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act and the DEA.

Research Coordination

• Will identify patients' eligibility for IRB approved clinical research studies.
• Will work with specific protocols to ensure that all protocol driven tests, examinations, and procedures are ordered, performed and evaluated and data is retrieved, entered on appropriate forms.
• Coordinates scheduling, orders appropriate tests, evaluates results, records data, performs patient evaluations and participates in care of patients on specific protocols regarding specific disease entities and treatment.
• Works in collaboration with the Principal Investigators of specific protocols to ensure the completeness of protocol requirements.

Educational Responsibilities

• Precepts new APPs and/or available to shadowing/teaching experiences of new staff and students.
• Develops expertise and expands knowledge in specific areas and shares that knowledge and expertise with colleagues as consultant in planning care for patients. Participates in rounds and meetings for consultation.
• Supervises and evaluates student/patient interactions in an academic setting.
• Assumes responsibility for patient care as provided by the student.
• Provides feedback for improvement within disease group.
• Adds value to disease group by initiating concepts for the group to function more effectively and efficiently.
• Is an EPIC Super User and EPIC resource for the disease group.

Fiscal Responsibility

• Assumes fiscal responsibility with working knowledge of evidence based medical model.
• Effectively uses resources of the patient and the institution.
• Is aware of and adheres to specific insurances while organizing and optimizing individualized care based on the disease state and restraints imposed by the HMO or insurances.
• Utilizes referrals to Home Health in order to provide optimum care in the appropriate setting.
• Has knowledge of and utilizes all available resources.

Referrals

• Establishes referral network.
• Collaborates with referring departments to ensure optimal patient experience throughout care continuum and among all multi-disciplinary team members.
• Works in collaboration with the physician.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program.
• Must be licensed as PA in the State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
• Must maintain current licensure and certification during the duration of employment.
• Current CPR certification.
• Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

National Board Certification.

Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required.

Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.

Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Role/Level/Range: ACRP/04/MG.

Starting Salary Range: $112,572 - $152,900 Annually ($123,100 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.).
