The Brigham and Women's Hospital, Inc. is seeking a Physician Assistant for the Medical-Surgical ICU (MSICU). You will practice at the highest level of your license, delivering comprehensive critical care to diverse medical and surgical patients.

The team includes critical care-attending physicians, a critical care pharmacist, respiratory therapists, and ICU nurses. You will admit histories, perform exams, assist in developing treatment plans, and respond to emergencies with supervising

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Physician Assistant studies.
  • PA licensure in good standing (State License).
  • Minimum 2 years of PA experience preferred.
  • Ability to assess medical conditions and interpret findings.
  • Strong communication and teamwork in ICU settings.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Medical-Surgical ICU (MSICU) at Brigham and Women's Hospital is a pioneering 10-bed unit and the first Physician Assistant-run ICU in our hospital. Our PAs practice at the highest level of their license, providing comprehensive critical care to a diverse mix of medical and surgical patients in a dynamic, high-acuity environment. Our clinical team is supported by critical care-trained attending physicians with expertise spanning Acute Care Surgery, Pulmonary Medicine, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, and Interventional Radiology. We also work alongside a critical care-specialized pharmacist, respiratory therapists, and experienced ICU nurses — giving our PAs access to exceptional interdisciplinary collaboration and mentorship at every level of care.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
  • Performs patient admitting histories and physicals; records information accurately in patient record in a timely fashion.
  • Performs bedside procedures, e.g.: insertion of lines and tubes; performs postoperative wound care and removal of tubes, lines, sutures, etc.
  • Examines and evaluates patients and assists in development of their treatment plan with attending intensivists.
  • Appropriately responds to emergency situations; manages patient issues as they arise in the ICU, to the extent that the PA will obtain and evaluate studies/labs, write orders, obtain consultations and interpret lab values and x-rays with the assistance of the supervising physicians as necessary.
  • Provides age specific care to medical/surgical intensive care patients from early adolescence through the geriatric ages.
  • Will work under the direction of supervising critical care attendings.
  • Provides teaching to medical students and physician assistant students and other health care personnel as appropriate.
  • Stays up to date on the latest literature in surgical critical care practice.
  • Participates in quality improvement, patient safety, and research efforts as directed by the service leadership. The PA should also initiate these efforts as appropriate.

  • Experience 2 years of experience as a PA preferred
  • Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
