Job summary

Radiology & Imaging Specialists seeks a Physician Assistant to support Interventional Radiology. The role performs pre- and post-procedure care, assists in vascular and nonvascular interventions, and coordinates testing and patient management under the supervision of an attending Interventional Radiologist.

The candidate should have current PA licensure, ACLS, NCCPA certification, and demonstrated competence with recent fluoroscopy cases.

Qualifications

  • Supervising physician with core privileges in Interventional Radiology.
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Demonstrated competence with OPPE/outcomes and 50 fluoroscopy procedures in the last 24 months.

Responsibilities

  • Makes preliminary diagnoses and follow-up decisions.
  • Orders or interprets diagnostic tests (x-ray, EKG, labs).
  • Performs or assists with interventional IR procedures per protocol.
  • Pre-assesses patients and coordinates imaging studies and labs.
  • Dictates procedures with final Attending IR approval.
  • Triages IR patients and supports weekend coverage.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Makes preliminary diagnosis or decides on follow-up procedures.
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-rays, electrocardiograms, and blood work, and interprets test results.
  • Develops and implements patient care plans, instructs, and counsels patients, and maintains records of treatments and results.
  • Provides general health education and assists with emergency treatment and complex procedures.
  • Reports and documents significant information and changes in patients' conditions.
  • Performs minimally invasive vascular and nonvascular procedures as mentioned in management protocol and collaborative agreement independently or under general supervision of attending interventional radiologist and per hospital competencies including but not limited to:
  • Assist with Port Placements
  • Paracentesis
  • Thoracentesis
  • U/S guided biopsies
  • Central venous catheter insertion and removal
  • PICC Line insertion and removal
  • Tunneled catheter placement, exchange, and removal,
  • Tube removal for biliary, nephrostomy, gastrostomy, or abscess.
  • Assist physician with any additional interventional studies.
  • Pre-assessment and assessment of interventional radiology patients undergoing imaging studies with IV contrast as required.
  • Patient Management of vascular and non-vascular illnesses
  • Assists in coordination of patient imaging studies and laboratory tests required for specific Interventional radiology tests and procedures through contact with the referring physicians and/or the patients directly.
  • Recognizes need for and obtains physician's input and guidance as indicated within limits of scope of practice
  • Facilitates/initiates inter/intra-departmental problem solving and communication
  • Conducts a pre-anesthesia, pre-procedural, and focused physical screening
  • Relays information to patients regarding preparation for laboratory tests, examinations, and procedures
  • Obtains an accurate abbreviated age-specific, advanced health history review of systems including biophysical and psychosocial data
  • Performs intake of patients, including the taking of a brief medical history & performing physical exam
  • Documents all consultations to include focused medical history, physical exam, and summary of consultations, treatment options reviewed, risk and benefits of procedures offered, patient disposition, and the results of all testing under the indirect supervision of the attending interventional radiologist.
  • Dictates all procedures which are performed independently with final approval by attending interventional radiologist
  • Triages interventional radiology patients via telephone and determines the need for emergency consultations based on acquired information and diagnostic testing necessary.
  • Participates in the development of individualized plans of care and ongoing follow-up.
  • Interprets laboratory and radiological findings as they relate to patients' clinical presentation and current treatments.
  • Participate in on call weekend coverage as assigned.
