Job summary

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center invites applications for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant III in Pediatric ICU. The role provides first-line care in a large Pediatric ICU associated with Children’s Health, Dallas and Plano sites.

APPs assess, diagnose, treat, educate, and coordinate care for trauma, neurosurgery, solid organ transplant, and ECMO patients with families. Scheduled hours include variable shifts, nights, weekends, and rotating holidays.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in nursing and Texas BON authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area.
• ARC-PA accredited PA program completion for PA candidates.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and treat critically ill pediatric patients in ICU.
• Develop and manage treatment plans and provide education to families.
• Perform comprehensive physical examinations and interpret diagnostic results.
• Coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams and refer when needed.
• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and research.

Job Summary

The Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be working in a large Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children's Health (practice sites at the Dallas and Plano campuses). The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, education, consultation, and care coordination as a first line provider to Trauma, Neurosurgery, Solid Organ Transplant, Medical Surgical and ECMO patients and their families.

Scheduled Hours: Variable shifts including nights, weekends, and rotating holidays

Experience and Education

Required

Education

• Master's degree in nursing or Higher degree and Documentation of completion of accredited Advanced Practice Education Program and Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. OR
• Master's degree graduate of a Master's or higher Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) accredited Physician Assistant program.

Licenses/Certifications

• Advanced Practice RN (CPNP-AC) by Texas State Board of Nursing upon hire and authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing upon hire. OR
• National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and certified licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board (PA-C) upon hire. AND
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics certified by the American Heart Association or Red Cross based on the UT Southwestern policy for Advanced Practice Providers upon hire.

Preferred Experience

• One year of Advanced Practice Provider experience in pediatric critical care is preferred.

Job Duties

• Diagnoses and treats critically ill patients, develops and manages treatment plans, and performs advanced procedures.
• Develops and implements treatment plans for patients.
• Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
• Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.
• Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills, as appropriate based on specialty and training.
• Provides relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures.
• Facilitates/participates in quality related initiatives through planned group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings, to improve clinical and system practice performance.
• Collaborates in research projects and protocols; and routinely applies evidence based best practices to patient care.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
