UT Southwestern Medical Center invites applications for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant II in Pediatric Pulmonary Integrated Therapy Unit. The APP collaborates with pulmonologists, educates families, and manages care for children with complex chronic pulmonary conditions.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in nursing or higher and Documentation of completion of accredited Advanced Practice Education Program and Texas Board of Nursing authorization
• Master's degree graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program and PA-C certification
• Current BLS and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications upon hire

Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and caring for pediatric pulmonary patients and their families. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in collaboration with the pulmonologist will serve in the Integrated Therapy Unit and assist families with patient education and device training including tracheostomy and ventilator settings for transition to home care. This is an autonomous role and requires critical thinking skills to manage the care of patients with complex, chronic pulmonary conditions and multi-organ system involvement.

Experience and Education

Required

Education

• Master's degree in nursing or Higher degree and Documentation of completion of accredited Advanced Practice Education Program and Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. OR
• Master's degree graduate of a Master's or higher Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) accredited Physician Assistant program.

Licenses/Certifications

• Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (CPNP-AC) by Texas State Board of Nursing upon hire and authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing upon hire. OR
• National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and certified licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board (PA-C) upon hire. AND
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified by the American Heart Association or Red Cross based on the UT Southwestern policy for Advanced Practice Providers.

Preferred Experience

• Prior Advanced Practice Provider experience in pediatric pulmonary, critical care, or complex care with ventilator management experience preferred.

Job Duties

• Diagnoses and treats critically ill patients, develops and manages treatment plans, and performs advanced procedures.
• Develops and implements treatment plans for patients.
• Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
• Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.
• Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills, as appropriate based on specialty and training.
• Provides relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures.
• Facilitates/participates in quality related initiatives through planned group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings, to improve clinical and system practice performance.
• Collaborates in research projects and protocols; and routinely applies evidence based best practices to patient care.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
