Job description

Job Summary:

Physician Assistants (PA) provide health care services to patients with acute episodic conditions, chronic problems, or those seeking health evaluation, preventive care, education, and counseling. Under physician supervision, PAs deliver care within KP's primary or specialty departments, adhering to Regional Practice Guidelines and Protocols. They perform physical exams, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and assume ongoing responsibility for patient care from discovery to recovery. PAs diagnose and treat chronic and episodic disorders, document health care plans and diagnoses, and maintain comprehensive records for review. They demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide high-quality, culturally sensitive service to members, colleagues, providers, and vendors. PAs may operate in expanded roles, providing primary, acute, or emergency care for complex medical or surgical conditions, often requiring advanced certification in specialties such as neonatal, intensive care, emergency medicine, or operating room. Formal internship or equivalent on-the-job training in the specialty is also required.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Collect subjective data (history).
  2. Collect objective data (physical exam).
  3. Develop an assessment (diagnosis).
  4. Develop and implement a management plan.
  5. Facilitate patient referrals to appropriate facilities and community resources.
  6. Order pharmacologic interventions.
  7. Develop and implement educational plans.
  8. Plan for follow-up care.
  9. Manage care for patients with complex medical or surgical conditions.
  10. Support compliance with Kaiser Permanente's Principles of Responsibility, maintaining privacy, confidentiality, ethical standards, and adherence to laws, regulations, accreditation, licensing, and organizational policies.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Minimum one (1) year experience as an NP or PA, unless specified otherwise by the department.

Education:

  • Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant Program or accredited RN and NP Program.
  • NP candidates: Master's degree in nursing (effective 01/01/03 for those not grandfathered in by CMS).

Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:

  • Nurse Practitioner: Furnishing Number (California), National Certificate, Registered Nurse License (California), Nurse Practitioner Certificate (California).
  • OR Physician Assistant: License from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants and Physician Assistant National Certificate.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • National Provider Identifier.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willing to consider Nurse Practitioner job code 50159.
  • If hiring a new graduate NP or PA, California Furnishing Number and DEA Registration Number must be obtained within twelve months of hire.
  • Extended probationary period of twelve months for new grads.
  • Current DEA Registration Number.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • URO experience preferred.
  • 1-3 years surgical or operative experience.

Notes:

  • Work schedule includes alternating weekends, Saturday and Sunday.
  • This is not a training position.
  • Must perform as a surgical assistant in the operating room.
  • Will conduct direct patient readings and ED consultations.
  • The backup 8-hour shift is from 1:30 pm to 10:00 pm.
