Job summary

Penn State Health is seeking a Physician Assistant for dedicated overnight inpatient coverage in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology service at Hershey Medical Center. The role involves managing inpatients and home calls, collaborating with a broad multidisciplinary team, and addressing oncology-related emergencies and toxicities.

Responsibilities include admissions, consults, discharge planning, and ensuring smooth patient handoffs.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an AMA approved Physician Assistant Program or higher degree meeting licensure requirements in the state of employment.
  • National Certification in the state of employment or with reciprocity and licensure to practice.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overnight inpatient coverage for pediatric hematology/oncology patients including inpatients and home patient calls.
  • Evaluate and manage acute clinical concerns such as fever and neutropenia, oncologic emergencies, and chemotherapy-related toxicities.
  • Perform admissions, consultations, cross-coverage assessments, and discharge planning as appropriate.
  • Coordinate care with attending physicians, fellows, residents, nursing teams, and subspecialty consultants.
  • Respond to rapid clinical changes and participate in emergency management and stabilization.
  • Facilitate safe handoffs between daytime and nighttime providers and document encounters per standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and educational initiatives.

Position Highlights
  • Dedicated overnight schedule with predictable block scheduling
  • Practice within a nationally recognized academic children's hospital
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including pediatric oncology, hematology, stem cell transplant, critical care, infectious diseases, surgery, radiology, and supportive care services
  • Manage a diverse patient population including children with leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors, brain tumors, sickle cell disease, bleeding disorders, and other complex hematologic conditions

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and manage acute clinical concerns, including fever and neutropenia, pain crises, transfusion reactions, oncologic emergencies, chemotherapy-related toxicities, and other urgent conditions
  • Perform admissions, consultations, cross-coverage assessments, and discharge planning as appropriate
  • Coordinate care with attending physicians, fellows, residents, nursing teams, and subspecialty consultants
  • Respond to rapid clinical changes and participate in emergency management and stabilization of critically ill patients
  • Facilitate safe and effective patient handoffs between daytime and nighttime providers
  • Document patient encounters and treatment plans in accordance with institutional standards
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and educational initiatives within the division
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
  • Graduate of an AMA approved Physician Assistant Program or baccalaureate or higher degree program that meets licensure requirements in the State of employment
  • National Certification in State of employment or in another State with reciprocity and licensure to practice in the State of employment
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
