Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Physician Assistant (PA) (ACLS) serves as an advanced practice practitioner. The PA provides diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical, and preventive care under the supervision of a licensed physician. Responsibilities include examining patients, interpreting imaging and lab results, writing prescriptions, obtaining patient histories, providing surgical assistance, and ordering therapies. The PA may work in inpatient or outpatient settings and can function independently under a physician’s license or as part of a treatment team. The role adheres to the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners and Houston Methodist policies.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree; graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Experience: One year of clinical experience.
  • Licenses & Certifications (required): PA – Texas State Licensure; PA‑C – Certified (NCCPA); BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA); ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA); DEA – Narcotics License within 6 months.
  • Knowledge and Abilities: Competent in patient‑care skills and ongoing competency assessments; proficient in spoken, read, and written English; effective communication with patients, physicians, families, and coworkers; clinical judgment and critical thinking for autonomous work; accountability for healthcare outcomes; therapeutic communication to build relationships with patients and teams; strong organizational, problem‑solving, and time‑management skills.
People Functions
  • Provide clinical leadership, act as a consultant and patient advocate.
  • Participate in rounds and interdisciplinary meetings; serve as first call and preceptor.
  • Communicate administrative and clinical information respectfully; promote workload balance and teamwork.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to manage patient care.
Service Functions
  • Coordinate timely patient care across providers, focusing on patient outcomes.
  • Enhance patient satisfaction through peer accountability.
  • Respond promptly to patient questions and emergencies.
Quality/Safety Functions
  • Perform diagnosis, prescribing, and treatment under practice guidelines.
  • Review medications and test reports; respond to critical results.
  • Conduct comprehensive health assessments and evaluate care outcomes.
  • Assist in developing protocols to ensure patient safety and improve practices.
Finance Functions
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including CPT coding.
  • Support department financial goals by optimizing efficiency and reducing length of stay.
Growth/Innovation Functions
  • Identify and implement innovative solutions to improve care or operations.
  • Provide education and research initiatives; update personal development plans.
Supplemental Requirements
  • Work Attire: Scrubs, business professional, and other department‑approved attire.
  • On‑Call: Yes; employees may be required to be on call during emergencies.
  • Travel: Possible travel within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area.
