Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts. Central Virginia health district is looking for an experienced applicant to fill their Physician Assistant position. This position performs patient care as a Physician Assistant with limited or no on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Physician Assistant by state code.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and clinical medicine
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

  • Skilled in all aspects of administering public health programs and directing a large and diverse organization in a dynamic environment

  • Previous clinical experience with the population served
  • Successful completion of the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE)
