Job summary

University of Chicago Medicine is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join the Operating Room team supporting OBGYN services. The APP will assist in a range of gynecologic surgeries, including robotic procedures, with emphasis on pre/post-operative care and collaboration with surgeons and staff.

The role requires OR experience, NP or PA credentials, and licensure in Illinois; ACLS and NCCPA/ANCC certifications are highly valued.

Qualifications

• Master's in nursing required or equivalent.
• NP certification by ANCC/AANP.
• Illinois RN and APN licensure.
• DEA prescriber number.
• OR experience preferred.
• PA route requires PA program completion and NCCPA cert.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a member of inpatient surgical team for Gynecology services.
• First assist in the operating room for laparoscopic and open gynecologic cases.
• Assist with robotic surgery including setup and instrumentation.
• Communicate with robotic vendors as needed.
• Conduct pre- and post-operative patient evaluations and case prep.
• Adapt to surgeon preferences to support efficient workflow and high-quality care.
• Provide educational and administrative support under leadership.

Job Description

Be part of a world-class academic healthcare system, The University of Chicago Medicine, as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in the Operating Room. In this role, the Advanced Practice Provider will assist the OBGYN Operating Room Services.

The Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management and will manage a caseload of patients by exercising autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The APP will provide healthcare and patient services that may include educational, research, and clinical nursing specialist support, as well as complete administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Director/leadership. The APP has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the physician through organized instruction and supervised practice.

Advanced Practice Provider Essential Job Functions

• Serving as a member of the inpatient surgical team for the Complex Gynecology service, Benign Gynecology service, and occasionally the Gynecologic Oncology service
• Working with the inpatient surgical team, including trainees: Residents, fellows, and medical students, with a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each team member
• First assisting in the operating room in a variety of laparoscopic and open gynecologic cases: Hysterectomy, myomectomy, excision of endometriosis; including placement of trocars, docking the daVinci robot, oversight of robotic instrumentation, and laparoscopic assistance during the procedure
• Communication with robotic vendors as needed
• Conducting pre and post-operative patient evaluation, including prepping cases and occasional post-operative checks
• Demonstrating initiative in becoming familiar with individual surgeon preferences and expectations to support efficient workflow and high-quality patient care
• Remaining flexible and adaptable, able to adjust to last-minute assignment changes in a high-complexity, fast-paced clinical environment

Nurse Practitioner Required Qualifications

• Master's of Science in Nursing
• Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration
• Must be certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse's Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
• Must have or be able to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers
• Operating Room experience preferred

Physician Assistant Required Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program
• Certification in ACLS and by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure / registration
