Job Summary

Provides optimum assistance to physicians through the performance of a wide variety of health care services, such as patient care tasks, diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic procedures.

Responsibilities

The Physician Assistant shall, under appropriate direction and supervision by a Physician, augment the Physician's data gathering abilities in order to assist the supervising Physician in reaching decisions and instituting care plans for the Physician's patients. A Physician Assistant shall have, as a minimum, the knowledge and competency to perform the following functions and may under appropriate supervision perform them; this list is not intended to be specific of all-inclusive:

  1. Screen patients to determine need for medical attention.
  2. Review patient records to determine health status.
  3. Take a patient history.
  4. Record pertinent patient data.
  5. Make decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatments of patients being seen for the initial evaluation of a problem or the follow-up evaluation of a previously diagnosed and stabilized condition.
  6. Prepare patient summaries.
  7. Initiate requests for commonly performed initial laboratory and radiological studies.
  8. Identify normal and abnormal findings in history, physical examination, and commonly performed laboratory studies.
  9. Initiate appropriate evaluation and emergency management for emergency situations; i.e., cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, injuries, burns, hemorrhage.
  10. Demonstrate a working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical terminology and abbreviations.
  11. Perform work in accordance with all departmental pay practices and scheduling policies, including but not limited to, overtime, various shift work, and on-call situations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact)

The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department’s identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.

Competency Statement

Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist.

Education

  • Post Graduate Diploma or Certificate Program (Required) Per WVBOM, a person seeking licensure must demonstrate to the board's satisfaction that he or she:A) Obtained a baccalaureate or master’s degree from an accredited program of instruction for physician assistants;B) Prior to July 1, 1994, graduated from an approved program of instruction in primary health care or surgery; or(C) Prior to July 1, 1983, was certified by the Board of Medicine as a physician assistant then classified as Type B;
