Physician (Aerospace Medicine) Fort Novosel, AL

The Army Aviation Warfighting Center, Fort Novosel (formerly Fort Rucker), Alabama, is located in the southeast corner of Alabama. The post is located in Dale County. Fort Novosel is approximately 80 miles south of Montgomery and 20 miles northwest of Dothan. Florida's Gulf Coast lies 80 miles to the south. The communities of Enterprise, Daleville, and Ozark are west, south and east of the post, respectively and serve as the three main gates. The post covers about 64,500 acres of countryside in an area known as the "Wiregrass," named for a wild grass peculiar to the region. The area is known for its lower cost of living, making it a prime target for real estate investments.

Responsibilities

POSITION DUTIES:

Works under the general professional direction of the Chief, Department of Primary Care or Chief, Department of Aviation Medicine; work is performed with considerable freedom from technical supervision. Consultation in a specialty area is available on request. The patient care duties involve the full range of requirements established by appropriate Army regulations and Army Health Clinic. Duties require recognizing cases which require referral or consultation with specialists. Quality assurance reports, various regulatory inspections, and the degree of patient satisfaction constitute review of work. 1. Provides medical oversight to health care delivery personnel assigned to or with the Aviation Medicine Clinic. This includes allied health professionals and enlisted medical specialists assigned. Provides medical oversight for the coordination of care obtained from outside civilian and non-civilian hospitals. Plans work, prepares schedules, and establishes priorities. Assigns work based on priorities, selective consideration of difficulty and requirements of case and capabilities of subordinate staff. Evaluates performance of assigned personnel, providing advice, counsel, or instruction to individuals on both work performance and administrative matters. Identifies developmental and training needs of staff. 2. Provides routine care for medical problems within scope of practice and scope of care for the Aviation Medicine Clinic. Care is generally rendered in the outpatient clinic on a scheduled basis, but to meet patient needs, patients may need to be walked in or added to the physician's schedule. Provides care, advice, and referral coordination via telephone and e-mail as appropriate. Meets targets for productivity established for the department. Performs military specific medical tasks, including (but not limited to) periodic physical exams, follow-up for health issues identified during Post-Deployment Health Reassessment, temporary and permanent profiles, fitness-for-duty evaluations, medical boards, flight physicals and aeromedical summaries for waiver and exception to policy submission. Performs procedures within scope of practice and scope of care for the Aviation Medicine Clinic. Physician must have or be willing to be trained to attain a working knowledge of computer systems and databases which are required in the performance of daily tasks. These include but are not limited to: MHS Genesis, Microsoft Outlook, MEDPROS, and AERO. Provides diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic services to patients primarily in the Aviation Medicine Clinic. As a physician, is responsible for examining, diagnosing, and prescribing courses of treatment in cases of illness and injuries. Subject to provide on-call coverage as needed in support of Aviation Medicine and his/her specialty service. Duties require incumbent to be board eligible or board certified in Aviation Medicine, or Family Medicine, Pediatrics, or Internal Medicine with certification in DOD sponsored Aviation Medicine Program; Basic Life Support (BLS) certified and be able to perform said protocols outlined therein in a manner which is unsupervised. Incumbent must also be able to communicate those skills and knowledge to other health professionals and paraprofessionals in time of need. 3. Supports the medical aspects of the Aviation Safety Program by conducting lectures and classes for aviation personnel, conducting flight line inspections, observing, examining and treating patients under flight conditions and supervising the fitting and use of personnel safety equipment. Initiates accident investigations to include duties as medical officer on accident investigation/flight safety boards. Manages aeromedical requirements as outlined in the Aviation Resource Management Survey (ARMS) and as established by the United States Aeromedical Activity (USAAMA). 4. Must understand the medical mission necessary to support the Aviation Clinic and Fort Novosel. Works closely with the Performance Improvement Program to reduce patient complaints and enhance the image of medical services available. Coordinates with ancillary care areas, i.e., Radiology, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Nutritional Care, and Rehabilitation Services and Occupational Health. Participates in training courses as a participant and/or instructor to include precepting residents. 5. Serves as flight surgeon on call with duties including above mentioned accident investigation, to include irregular hours such as weekends, nights, and/or holidays as deemed appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned

Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).

Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
