Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee treatment of opioid use disorder with medications, including induction onto MOUD (e.g., buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone when clinically indicated).
- Discuss treatment options with patients using shared decision making and prescribe MOUD according to DOC protocol.
- May administer long-acting injectable buprenorphine when nursing staff are unavailable.
- May train providers and nursing staff on administration of long-acting injectable buprenorphine; coordinate care with release planner to ensure community follow up prior to release.
- Work with community providers to ensure smooth transitions of care with the health services reentry team.
Coordinate care and co-manage patients on methadone treatment for OUD
- Evaluate patients via virtual or in-person visits to discuss and manage treatment with methadone and transitions between medications.
- Co-manage prescriptions for patients on methadone with other addiction physicians in DOC.
- Coordinate with MOUD team, facility scheduling, providers, and nursing staff regarding ongoing OUD treatment.
- Write prescriptions for methadone within DEA regulations for carceral facilities and document accordingly.
- Coordinate with MOUD nurses and re-entry team for transitions when patients release to ensure seamless community care.
Consultation for addiction care of DOC patients
- Respond to requests for addiction-related care and provide recommendations.
- Provide care for less complex cases via communication with primary providers; complex cases via direct or virtual appointments.
Training of staff/providers on addiction care
- In collaboration with the addiction medicine team, provide statewide training on topics such as addiction as a disease model and MOUD.
Other duties as assigned.
Required qualifications:
- Unrestricted medical license in Washington (MD or DO). License must be renewed and proof provided annually.
- Current and maintained board certification in addiction medicine. Experience with prescribing, titrating, tapering, and managing methadone.
- Current CPR certification; proof provided annually.
- One year post-residency experience with medical assessment techniques and ICD-10 coding.
- Ethics and integrity: knowledge of professional guidelines, patient confidentiality, and professional boundaries.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
- MD or DO from an accredited school.
- Experience in correctional facilities.
- Experience in an opioid treatment program.
