Summary

Physical Therapy Assistant performs technical work with limited supervisory duties administering assigned physical therapy treatments in the rehabilitation department of a county hospital. Physical Therapy Assistants perform assigned therapeutic activities pre-determined by Registered Physical Therapists in one or more areas such as exercise, modality or ward. An additional responsibility is the supervision of Physical Therapy Aides in the movement of patients and the maintenance of treatment areas and equipment.

Responsibilities

Specializes in all facets of physical therapy treatment for patients of all ages. Possesses and maintains an understanding of the principles of growth and development. Conducts a progressive physical therapy treatment program following the assessment of the patient's status and a treatment plan established by the supervising physical therapist. Reviews each patient's status and treatment program with the supervising physical therapist on a frequent, consistent basis. Documents patient treatment in the medical record according to the established policy. Completes and submits daily charge vouchers for assigned patients. Maintains accurate productivity records and produces appropriate amount of treatment units. Orders equipment needed by the patient in consultation with the supervising physical therapist. Assists the physical therapist in the clinical education of physical therapy assistant students. Participates in patient related therapeutic recreation programs in order to transfer patient skills acquired in therapy to functional use. Administers physical therapy treatment using, but not limited to the following procedures: Manually and mechanically applied passive, active, isokinetic and conditioning exercises; Electrical stimulation; Patient education; Ultrasound etc. Participates in learning experiences to maintain and improve clinical knowledge and skills. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned. Performs additional advanced job duties, as outlined in the Rehab Clinical Ladder, which must be pre-approved and determined by the Rehab Committee. Experience

Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

High school diploma is required. Bachelor's degree or completion of required internship is strongly preferred.

Skill

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the clinical area.

Credentials

Valid Florida license as a Physical Therapy Assistant is required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.

Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers.
