Job description

MAIN FUNCTION:
The Physical Therapist Assistant Level II is responsible for administering treatment programs as established by the supervising Physical Therapist.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to the Assistant Director, Rehabilitation Services and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate's degree in Physical Therapy required
  • Licensure as a PTA in Massachusetts required
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification required
  • Five (5) years experience as a Physical Therapist Assistant (including inpatient and outpatient services) required; must meet departmental criteria for Level 2 Therapist.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and clinical proficiency required

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Administer and instruct patients in therapeutic exercises, gait training, wound care, manual therapy, ADL training, and orthotic/prosthetic training.
  • Administer modalities such as whirlpool, heat/cold, ultrasound, paraffin, electrical stimulation, TENS, CPM, traction, and iontophoresis, following professional standards and clinical ability.
  • Monitor patient responses and modify treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising Physical Therapist.
  • Report patient performance and responses to the supervising Physical Therapist.
  • Assist in planning the termination of patient services with the supervising Physical Therapist.
  • Document and maintain accurate treatment records per department policy.
  • Demonstrate leadership by identifying improvement opportunities, problem-solving, and exhibiting strong interpersonal skills.
  • Participate as a member of departmental or hospital committees such as quality improvement, education planning, peer review, safety, and others.
  • Oversee PTA or PT students in collaboration with the Physical Therapist.
  • Engage in departmental and hospital committee work and task forces as required.
  • Commit to ongoing learning, skill development, and serve as a resource to colleagues through continuing education and research.
  • Identify personal continuing education needs and pursue professional development.
  • Collaborate effectively with students, aides, and volunteers.
  • Maintain treatment areas, including equipment upkeep and restocking supplies.
  • Participate in non-patient care duties such as scheduling, billing, and record keeping.
  • Adhere to hospital and departmental policies on confidentiality, safety, infection control, and environmental standards.
  • Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences to stay current in the field.
  • Attend meetings and fulfill competency and retraining requirements annually.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
