Summary
The incumbent is responsible for a range of clinical functions in physical therapy, including delivery, education, screening, and disposition of routine clinical operational matters for evaluation and treatment in direct patient care. Work is performed in a regional acute care facility with rapid patient turnover, serving a complex patient population, both inpatient and outpatient, acute and chronic.
Qualifications
Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
- Education: Must meet at least one of the following:
- Associate degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.
- Or graduate of foreign physical therapy assistant degree programs meeting educational requirements and having passed the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) for PTAs.
- Or graduate of military physical therapy assistant programs meeting educational requirements and having passed the NPTE for PTAs.
Licensure:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a PTA in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico), or District of Columbia.
Exceptions for Non-Licensed PTAs:
- Non-licensed applicants meeting minimum qualifications may be appointed temporarily pending licensure, not exceeding two years, under 38 U.S.C. § 7401(a)(1)(B).
- They must work under direct supervision of a licensed PTA or PT.
- Non-licensed individuals can only be appointed at entry level and cannot be promoted or converted until licensed.
- Failure to obtain licensure may result in termination.
English Language Proficiency:
Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English as per 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Grade Determinations:
For GS-8, one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade is required, along with demonstrated KSAs including independent treatment implementation, intervention variation, data collection, patient instruction, modification of treatment, critical change identification, interdisciplinary collaboration, among others. Physical Requirements:
Regular physical exertion, lifting, and good sensory acuity are required.
Duties
- Provide comprehensive monitoring of functional and occupational roles using various measures.
- Deliver direct physical therapy interventions to improve safety, wellness, and performance in mobility, strength, education, and social participation.
- Apply treatment theories and procedures appropriately, including activity analysis and behavioral interventions.
- Work across all VHA program areas, providing independent professional services.
- Perform program management duties as needed.
- Develop and carry out a variety of treatment techniques and modalities.
- Collaborate with patients, families, caregivers, and the treatment team.
- Document patient data thoroughly in CPRS, including treatment sessions, goals, and progress.
- Establish patient appointments via phone contact.
- Serve as a consultant for complex cases, participate in interdisciplinary conferences, and provide clinical education and supervision for students.
- Travel may be required for home evaluations, up to 60 minutes away.
