Job summary

UCSF Health Stanyan Hospital Rehabilitation Services seeks a Staff Physical Therapist (Physical Therapist 2) to provide both direct and indirect patient care for adults and older adults, with occasional pediatric cases. You will evaluate patients, develop plans of care, and administer therapy while maintaining accurate records.

You will supervise trainees, contribute to quality improvement, and participate in professional development.

Qualifications

  • DPT Doctoral graduate degree.
  • If graduated 15 or more years ago, a bachelor’s degree.

  • Basic computer skills including work within Epic electronic medical record.
  • Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Job description

This is an outpatient position within the UCSF Health Stanyan Hospital Rehabilitation Services department. The Staff Physical Therapist (Physical Therapist 2) reports to the Clinical Supervisor and provides both direct and indirect patient care services, primarily with adult and geriatric patients, though pediatric and adolescent patients may also be treated. The role involves planning and administering a full range of physical therapy services, maintaining patient records, supervising trainees, and participating in professional development and quality improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities
Direct and Indirect Patient Care
  • Performs physical therapy evaluations on referral by a licensed approved provider for patients of varying clinical complexity, across levels of acuity.
  • Selects and administers various evidence-based muscle, neurological, gait, functional and developmental tests to determine a patient’s functional impairments.
  • Establishes short- and long-term therapeutic goals based on results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring provider and caregiver/family.
  • Develops a therapeutic plan of care based on results of the evaluation and established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic interventions based on the patient’s progress and performance.
  • Administers direct patient care utilizing the full range of physical therapy techniques and methods within scope of practice and level of competence, appropriate to the patient’s goals and plan of care.
  • Delegates and supervises any part of the patient’s therapeutic intervention which can be legally and appropriately done by support staff.
  • Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate and timely patient care records as required by policy and payer requirements, including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes, charges for services provided, and third-party payer reports (e.g., CCS, Medi-Cal).
  • Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, caregivers/families, department staff, managers, and other clinical personnel.
  • Reports on patient progress at various rounds, clinics, and team conferences as indicated.
  • Demonstrates effective time management and organization skills.
  • Performs any other duties related to patient care, as required.
Departmental Responsibilities
  • Completes work-related routine departmental tasks (e.g., timecard completion, schedule sign up) in a timely manner.
  • Communicates clearly and timely with Supervisor and Manager regarding work requirements including changes in availability/status, conformance with licensure and AHA BLS certification renewal, and completion of UC required learning.
  • Participates in and may lead department and organizational compliance, quality, safety, and process improvement activities.
  • Performs any other duties, as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.
  • Represents the department as a professional.
Educational Responsibilities
  • Participates in staff inservice education programs, staff and area team meetings.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new staff; may serve as a clinical mentor for colleagues seeking to advance their skills and competence.
  • Participates in and provides programs to other hospital departments and the community.
  • Participates in clinical instruction of affiliating short- and long-term Physical Therapy students.
  • Participates in educational activities related to other health care students (e.g., nursing, medical, occupational therapy students).
  • Seeks appropriate opportunities for ongoing clinical education and professional development, completing 40 hours or more, annually.
Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior clinical experience in outpatient orthopedic clinical patient care settings, including sports medicine experience.
  • APTA Board Certification in an area of Physical Therapy Specialty.
  • Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team.
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Physical Therapist by the Physical Therapy Board of California.
  • Possession of or proven eligibility for AHA BLS certification.
