The Physical Therapist I (Entry/competent), Outpatient is responsible for assessing and treating functional impairments, including orthopedic injuries, neurologic conditions, oncology/lymphedema, and women’s/men’s health. The goal is to maintain or restore patients to their maximum functional performance.
Responsibilities
- Individually responsible for differential diagnosis and supervision of patient care under direct access law without physician oversight.
- Evaluates and develops plans of care according to American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) guidelines.
- Administers evidence-based physical therapy treatments appropriate to diagnosis and to APTA guidelines.
- Documents and charges for patient care services in accordance with regulatory, licensing, payer, and accrediting requirements.
- Completes progress notes/recertification to demonstrate the need for continued skilled services as outlined by federal, state, and insurance regulations.
- Completes discharge planning according to APTA guidelines by consulting with physicians, OT, SLP, and with the patient/family.
- Completes peer-to-peer insurance review and other required forms for obtaining authorization for services.
- Meets productivity/KPI targets.
Competent
- Coordinates external resources and support for patients and families.
- Completes yearly mandatory education for employment and VA licensure.
- Participates in at least one community service activity related to the PT profession or sponsored by Centra.
- Serves as a Clinical Instructor for PT students (clinical 1-2) or interns (>30 hours) applying to PT school.
- Provides one in-service annually to staff.
- Completes two of the following: participation in APTA with at least 50% attendance, efforts to impact legislation, or performing a clinical activity or special project as pre-approved.
- Supervises Licensed Physical Therapy Assistants, rehab assistants, and support staff.
Qualifications
Required Education: Graduate of an accredited PT program (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate)
Preferred Education: Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy
Preferred Experience: At least 1 year outpatient clinical experience; new graduates considered.
Required Certifications and Licenses: Current Virginia PT license or PT Compact license privileges.
