With 204 beds, it is the third largest of Duke Health’s four hospitals and offers a comprehensive array of services, including cancer, cardiovascular, neuroscience, advanced gastrointestinal, and wound healing care.

Job Summary

Provide physical therapy services to patients/clients with impairments, functional limitations, disabilities, or changes in physical function and health status due to injury, disease, or other causes. Offer prevention and wellness services, including screenings and health promotion. Serve as a resource for the team and department, participate in orientation of new staff, physicians, and health personnel, and engage in teaching activities for students. Work within practice guidelines as defined by North Carolina state law.

Work Performed

  1. Demonstrate sound clinical reasoning in evaluating complex data, diagnosing, and developing care plans.
  2. Collaborate with patients and families to create and update care plans with measurable goals, including discharge planning tailored to individual needs.
  3. Understand and incorporate the role of physical therapy within the context of the patient’s total needs, environment, and age considerations.
  4. Exhibit age-appropriate competency skills relevant to the patient’s conditions.
  5. Follow intervention protocols and adjust plans as needed.
  6. Discharge patients when goals are achieved or services are no longer necessary, with appropriate follow-up.
  7. Maintain competency in evaluations relevant to your practice area.
  8. Meet patient care productivity standards.
  9. Work collaboratively with supervisors and peers to optimize team productivity.
  10. Utilize support personnel effectively.
  11. Participate in patient coverage across department divisions as needed.
  12. Assess learning needs of patients and caregivers; initiate education appropriately.
  13. Use suitable educational methods, monitor responses, and adjust accordingly.
  14. Ensure patients and families understand how to access further interventions.
  15. Complete timely and professional documentation.
  16. Deliver clear oral reports.
  17. Accurately perform data collection within deadlines.
  18. Meet peer review standards.
  19. Provide clinical education for students, supervising 1-2 students during long-term rotations for experienced therapists, adjusting supervision as needed.
  20. Participate in outreach, in-services, referrals, and community interactions.
  21. Contribute to research activities to improve outcomes.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to push, pull, lift, carry, and transfer patients safely.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree or certification in physical therapy; Master's or Clinical Doctorate preferred.
