Job Description - Physical Therapist - Eastern Long Island Hospital (2500340)

Department: Physical Therapy

Position Description: The Physical Therapist (PT) plans and executes rehabilitation programs to help patients return to a higher level of physical function after an accident or surgery. The PT will assist the patient in managing or lessening pain through a combination of physical activity, reflexology, massage, and muscular and skeletal manipulation. The PT evaluates, diagnoses, and treats patients with disorders that limit their abilities to move or function normally in daily life. Plans and implements specific treatment programs for individual and grouped patients according to the principles of the American Physical Therapy Association. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary healthcare treatment team. Supervises physical therapy assistants, rehabilitation aides, and volunteers. Provides an educational in-service to the staff annually as assigned by the Supervisor. Provides holiday coverage in the acute care setting. Assumes the role of clinical instructor to physical therapy students as assigned by the Rehab Director or CCCE.

Experience: Experience with a wide range of patient age groups and injuries. One (1) year of acute care preferred. Strong experience administering a wide range of physical therapy techniques. Experience assisting and directing treatments given by aides, technicians, and assistants. Two (2) years of outpatient, adult (PT) experience. Three (3) years of adult orthopedic experience preferred. Orthopedic clinical specialist preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in physical therapy from an approved physical therapy program is required.
  • Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy preferred.
  • Licensed New York State Physical Therapist.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation ("CPR") / Basic Life Support (BLS) and Automated External Defibrillator ("AED") certification is mandatory.
  • Ability to create plans that involve stretching, strength training, exercises, and physical manipulation to help people recover.
  • Ability to educate patients and families about what is possible and keep patients motivated during ongoing therapy.
  • Track progress and report to patients and their families.

Physical Demands: Must possess the ability to perform maximum assist in transferring patients via wheelchair and maneuver equipment within and between departments. Demonstrates strengthening, flexibility exercises, and ambulation. Can perform manual muscle testing and range of motion. Compassion, attention to detail, dexterity, interpersonal skills, and stamina are required.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services.
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen.
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
