Job Description

The Physical Therapist Assistant - Specialty is responsible for evaluating and providing treatment to patients, planning and implementing the Physical Therapy Specialty Service Line including following Clinic protocols, implementing treatment programs, monitoring patient progress towards treatment goals, and directly communicating with referring physicians. The role also includes accountability for service line performance and improvement.

Job Relationships

Reports to the Director of Physical Therapy

Principal Responsibilities
  • Assist in performing evaluation procedures and planning treatment programs.
  • Rule out contra-indications to treatment and recommend necessary changes.
  • Perform electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, traction, and massage techniques following established procedures and within the limits set by the patient's condition and tolerance.
  • Administer therapeutic exercises to improve posture, strength, range of motion, coordination, and endurance.
  • Provide fitting and application of recommended orthotic devices.
  • Instruct patients in the use of assistive devices and physical therapy procedures to be continued at home.
  • Monitor the effects of treatment and modify techniques to achieve maximum benefit.
  • Document progress reports for patient's records.
  • Verbally report progress or changes in the patient's condition to the Physical Therapist and/or referring physician as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional mannerism and a clean, neat work environment.
  • Schedule appointments and maintain daily attendance records.
  • Accurately complete charge tickets and maintain records of treatments given.
  • Communicate tactfully in person or by telephone, and provide excellent customer service.
  • Help maintain equipment and notify the Director of problems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures and file incident reports as needed.
  • Notify Physical Therapist or the Director of any situations beyond the PTA's responsibilities.
  • Comply with clinic policies and OSHA training requirements.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience

Associate Degree in Science as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

Licenses/Certificates

Licensed by the State of Illinois (PTA). CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines required within 30 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of kinesiotaping, LSVT BIG for Parkinson's, Graston Technique, Sports Medicine, McKenzie Method for back pain, Lymphedema Management, Women's Health, and Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is preferred.

Working Environment

Extensive walking, standing, kneeling, and heavy lifting are required.
