Responsibilities
- Plan appropriate treatment programs under the supervision of a physical therapist for children and adults of all ages based on physician referral, evaluation results, patient/family goals and interests, sound clinical judgment, and other pertinent available information.
- Administer daily treatment ensuring age-appropriateness and necessary adjustments with the physical therapist's assistance to meet the patient's changing needs.
- Communicate with physicians, team members, other professionals, family members, and caregivers to share information that will assist in achieving optimal patient care. Establish effective rapport with patients of all ages depending on assignment.
- Select appropriate assistive devices for patients and instruct in their maintenance and use.
- Complete all competency assessments related to patient care.
Patient and Family Education
- Provide education to patients and families based on their needs, addressing learning readiness, preferences, and barriers.
Documentation
- Complete all documentation according to departmental policy.
Discharge Planning
- Consult with the physical therapist regarding patient discharge readiness and plan accordingly, including home treatment plans and equipment arrangements.
Evaluation and Goal Setting
- Assist the physical therapist during evaluations and complex treatments.
- Interpret reassessment results in collaboration with the supervising PT as appropriate.
- Establish treatment goals jointly with the physical therapist.
Daily Operations
- Maintain a productive schedule, with about 6 hours of direct clinical care daily, and report schedule changes to management.
- Perform duties such as charge entry, maintaining a clean environment, and participating in departmental activities and improvements.
- Follow safety and infection control policies, report issues promptly, and participate in meetings and ongoing education.
Supervision of Assistive Personnel and Students
- Supervise PT assistant students and interns after completing at least one year of clinical experience, as requested by management.
Qualifications
- Associate's degree from an accredited PTA program.
- Licensed or eligible in Illinois.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Potential exposure to hazardous materials, diseases, and bodily fluids.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; use patient handling equipment for heavier lifts.
- May require working evenings, weekends, and holidays.
