Job Summary/Objective
Under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist, the Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) conducts medically prescribed physical therapy programs outlined in a patient’s treatment plan. Responsibilities include assisting patients in achieving treatment goals in various settings such as schools, outpatient clinics, inpatient facilities, and home health environments. This role requires an associate's degree in physical therapy and adherence to relevant regulations and standards of care.
Essential Functions/Duties/Responsibilities
• Implement physical therapy treatment plans as directed by a licensed Physical Therapist.
• Instruct patients in the use of exercise programs, mobility aids, and adaptive equipment to enhance functional independence.
• Monitor and document patient progress, response to treatment, and any changes in condition.
• Provide feedback to the Physical Therapist on patient progress and potential adjustments to the treatment plan.
• Educate patients and caregivers on continued therapy practices and home exercise programs.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with department policies and regulatory requirements.
• Assist in maintaining therapy equipment and treatment areas.
• Promote a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients.
• Adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and professional guidelines.
Education, Certificates, and License
Education:
• Associate’s Degree in Physical Therapy required.
Certificates / License:
• Licensed as a Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) in Missouri or ability to obtain licensure.
Certifications:
• Basic Life Support (BLS), active or within 30 days of hire.
Skills/Abilities
• Strong knowledge of physical therapy techniques and modalities.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for patient interaction and collaboration with the healthcare team.
• Ability to follow detailed treatment plans and provide effective patient care.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Physical capability to assist patients with mobility and perform therapy-related tasks.
• Ability to adapt to various therapy settings and patient needs.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift and/or assist patients weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
• Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods of time during patient treatments.
• Ability to kneel, crouch, and squat to assist with patient mobility and exercise routines.
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including supporting or repositioning patients.
• Visual and auditory acuity to observe patient condition, ensure safety, and monitor progress.
• Ability to perform manual therapeutic techniques, such as massage or joint mobilization.
• Ability to drive to patient locations.
• Ability to use a computer and other office equipment as required for patient documentation and communication.
• Ability to handle stressful or emergency situations, including assisting in patient transfers or responding to medical situations.
• Ability to work in environments requiring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent exposure to infectious diseases.
• Ability to sustain physical activity throughout long shifts, including standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
