Job Summary

Under supervision, incumbents perform the duties of an operational level physical therapist. The Per Diem Physical Therapist reports to the Clinical Supervisor, Physical Therapy and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The Per Diem P.T. works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The Per Diem P.T. with specific pediatric competencies may also work with infants, children and/or adolescents.

Under general direction and upon receipt of written referrals, the Per Diem P.T. plans and administers a full range of physical therapy services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments and disabilities. Services include patient evaluations using physical therapy tests and measurements, establishment of therapeutic intervention goals and development of therapeutic intervention programs, and implementation of therapeutic intervention plans utilizing physical therapy modalities and procedures. The Per Diem Physical Therapist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of patient care services. While performing job duties, the Per Diem P.T. may also provide guidance to support personnel including Physical Therapist Assistants and Rehabilitation Aides, as needed.

The mission of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science is to provide evidence-based, patient-centered physical therapy services for the community, and to educate scholarly, socially sensitive clinicians, educators, and researchers in physical therapy and rehabilitation science who will lead the profession into the next century. Physical therapy students and clinical faculty participate as part of a team within an environment of health care that is patient focused and directed towards building the scientific base of clinical practice, with an eye toward equity, quality, accessibility, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and administer a full range of physical therapy services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of PT intervention in preparation for discharge.
  • Administer direct patient care, utilizing the full range of physical therapy techniques.
  • Determine appropriate plan of care for patients based on medical necessity while taking into account insurance restrictions.
  • Delegate and coordinate therapeutic interventions that can be performed by support staff.
  • Prepare, maintain and transmit accurate patient care records (progress notes, discharge notes, third-party payer reports).
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, department staff, managers and other hospital personnel.
  • Participate in department quality assurance and performance improvement activities, including research projects and clinical teaching with students from the DPT program.
  • Represent the department professionally.
Problem Solving
  • Evaluate effectiveness of PT intervention in preparation for discharge.
  • Determine appropriate plan of care for patients based on medical necessity while considering insurance restrictions.
  • Communicate with referring providers and allied health professionals to provide optimal care.
  • Assist with research projects and clinical teaching activities.
  • Address faculty non-compliance and decisions regarding insurance eligibility and benefits.
  • Respond to formal student complaints.
Qualifications, Licenses and Certifications
Required Qualifications
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to recognize signs of distress.
  • Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication.
  • Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of one year outpatient patient care experience.
  • Prior physical therapy experience in an academic medical center environment.
  • Prior experience working with an interdisciplinary health provider team.
  • Possession of a degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited professional educational program.
  • Possession of a Board Certification from the APTA.
  • Prior EMR documentation experience.
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
  • Licensure as a Physical Therapist with the California State Board of Medical Quality Assurance and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification.
